The Comox Valley is a vibrant region that is attractive to young families, retirees, and those that appreciate simple living. The main areas are Comox, Cumberland, and the city of Courtenay. Fanny Bay, Merville, Union Bay, Royston, and Black Creek are smaller communities also found within the Comox Valley.
The Comox Valley is known for its abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities.
Skiing and snowboarding can be found at the Mount Washington Alpine Resort. This is one of the most popular mountains on Vancouver Island for winter activities. The Alpine Village is a place to rest, dine, and shop in between activities. Hiking, biking, swimming, and sports are other fun outdoor activities residents enjoy.
This close-knit community regularly participates in seasonal activities and festivals. WinterFest opens the year with skiing and winter-themed attractions. Dine Around Comox Valley and the Island Taste Trail highlight the best of local restaurants. The BC Shellfish & Seafood Festival in June celebrates the abundance of seafood produced locally, featuring top chefs, delicious seafood cuisine, competitions, and more. These are just some of the many Comox Valley Festivals and Events available each year.
Travellers enjoy using both the Comox Valley Airport (YQQ) for worldwide flights and the BC Ferries for sailings to Powell River. The airport is used by airlines such as WestJet, Air Canada, Pacific Coastal Airlines, and more. There is a good amount of choice between airlines and the airport itself is relatively small, making it less stressful than using Vancouver’s large airport.
Living in Comox means being involved in a welcoming and warm community surrounded by both nature and modern amenities. Out of the three regions, Comox has the most waterfront access with areas like Goose Spit Park, Kye Bay, Kin Beach Provincial Park, and Balmoral Beach. If you are looking for a waterfront or ocean view property, you will have a better chance of looking in Comox compared with Courteney and Cumberland.
There aren’t as many commercial real estate options in Comox compared with Courteney, but they do exist. Smaller office spaces, retail stores, and restaurants are the bulk of options here.
Where Comox shines is in its residential real estate options. You will find a wide variety of home styles and architectural types within Comox. Ranchers, single-family homes, split-level, ground-level, basement suites, duplexes, condominiums, and townhouses are all common options.
While some people may think Courteney and Comox are the same, they are different municipalities that happen to be located right next to each other. Of the two, Courteney has the best shopping options within the Comox Valley. The downtown core of Courteney contains several boutiques and shops specializing in fashion, sports, home decor, jewelry, and more. In this regard, there are many commercial real estate listing opportunities for retail stores, restaurants, and office spaces downtown. The western side of the city is being developed, offering empty lots as a blank canvas.
There are a variety of residential real estate options within Courteney. Old, character homes are just as prominent as modern builds. Most homes are split-level single-family homes, but you will also find a number of rancher-style, ground-level, and main entry with basement homes available. Common styles include West Coast contemporary, custom-built, modern, craftsman, colonial, and the occasional Tudor. Condos and townhouses are also fairly common within Courteney.
While Courteney and Comox are quite similar and close to each other, Cumberland is located a bit more inland. The Village is only about a fifteen-minute drive to Courteney and all of your amenities and a short 30 minutes up to Mount Washington for winter shredding and summer mountain biking. Cumberland is ideal for those that want their immediate surroundings to be close to nature and fuss-free. This village is Vibrant and home to some of the best bike trails on the Island. There are many families but would be a good fit for anyone wanting a slower pace of life.
Newer subdivisions contain single-family homes primarily in the craftsman style with others as new custom homes. Most contain garages and are two storeys high. Older neighborhoods have large mid-century, split-level style homes and ranchers. Single-family homes are prominent in Cumberland, with fewer options for condominiums.
